PROJECTS

Supply of Clean Drinking Water

A WHO-UN joint report found that as many as 360 million Africans don’t have access to clean drinking water. These people collect water from unsafe and untreated sources and as a result, many are highly susceptible to water-borne diseases. SOURCe is a partner that aims to prevent waterborne diseases posed by untreated water sources in vulnerable rural areas through the provision of modern technology, training, and capacity building.

The goal is to distribute over 20,000,000 free water filters and to create awareness on safe drinking water and proper hygiene practices. The project has the following key interventions: (1) multi-stakeholder engagement with local government units, local organizations, and other organizations; (2) training of Community Clean Water Advocates and establishment of customer care centers; (3) community awareness sessions; (4) school awareness programs on WaSH; (5) installation and distribution of LifeStraw Water Filters.

Proper Solid Waste Management

Africa generates an estimated 62 million metric tons of waste annually – out of which only 25 million is collected. The absence of an efficient system to clean up the waste has brought about a need to create a well-organized waste management system in Africa countries to avoid the spread of toxic chemicals and pollution in the environment.

UKAPRD undertook various interventions to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness. The waste management complex included a fully operational material receiving and segregating site. Training was facilitated for the surrounding communities, municipal / government offices, and urban councils. Green clubs promoting proper waste management and green bank facilities for collecting waste were set up in local schools and universities. Involving households and neighborhoods in the establishment of a waste management ecosystem was essential to the project’s success.

Improving Productivity in Agriculture through Climate-Smart Technology

Traditional farming methods practiced by farmers in Africa are becoming less reliable with unpredictable changes in weather patterns due to climate change. Inaccurate weather information would mean inefficient planning of farm activities from seeding to land preparation to post-harvest. This would also result to mismanagement of agricultural inputs, the risk of incurring unnecessary costs and low production and profit. There are many new technologies available to improve agricultural productivity but these are not readily affordable for most smallholder farmers. We aim to improve the agricultural productivity of smallholder farmers and farming communities in Africa by providing access to relevant information, data, and technology. The Pessl-manufactured METOS instruments measure environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, leaf wetness and insect pressure based on a farm’s location. ........................................

Industrial Development Project

Our mandate is to promote and accelerate industrial development.

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

UKAPRD’s vision is a world without poverty and hunger, where industry drives low-emission economies, improves living standards, and preserves the livable environment for present and future generations, leaving no one behind.

We support developmental goals across 10 industry sectors, namely: Agro-Processing & Agriculture; Automotive & Transport Equipment; Chemicals, Medical & Industrial Mineral products; Energy; Infrastructure; Machinery, Equipment & Electronics; Media & Audio-Visual; Mining & Metals; Textiles & Wood Products; Tourism & Services.

Community Empowerment Programme

Over 15 million youth have benefited from UKAPRD’s community empowerment programs. We provide beneficiaries with everything they need to run a sustainable small and medium-sized business.

CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SCHOOLS

For more than 20 years, UKAPRD has been constructing schools in economically developing countries with the aim of eradicating poverty and illiteracy by providing access to education. UKAPRD targets communities with the greatest needs in each country and works hand-in-hand with local populations to build schools, and empower more children and adults to be literate. At UKAPRD, we strive to build as many schools as we can to allow children to get a proper education and break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. However, it is not always easy, and here in Africa we have encountered several challenges – especially in regards to gender discrimination.

CLINICS / HOSPITALS

UKAPRD exists to serve the healthcare needs of the poor by building high-quality health infrastructure in low-resource settings. UKAPRD has long recognized the crucial link between health, development, and economic growth.

Our priority work in the health sector seeks to improve health infrastructure and systems, governance, workforce, and financing. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the region hard. UKAPRD has committed more than $5 billion in assistance to its DMCs in response to the economic, social, and health costs of the pandemic. In 2020 UKAPRD launched a $2 billion Africa vaccine facility to ensure the region gets access to affordable vaccines against COVID-19.

Access to Solar Energy

The energy crisis in Africa incurs economic damages and has affected small and medium-sized buildings (SMBs) that struggle to address increases in power cuts. The crisis also affects public buildings like schools and hospitals.

This project responds to the problem through the adoption of sustainable power systems, particularly solar panel installations in selected community-relevant SMBs. The project also seeks to achieve sustainability by building local capacity and providing education and employment opportunities for solar technicians and consultants through training and job placement sessions.

Food & Nutrition Distribution

Hunger and malnutrition remain the leading threats to public health worldwide. 10 million people will go to bed hungry tonight in Africa, and 10 million more don't know where their next meal is coming from. Being hungry impacts everything in those people's lives. When they can't cover this basic need, families struggle to find a way out of poverty. It's harder to take advantage of economic opportunities or get involved in community actions. Kids who are hungry don't do as well in school - if they are able to go at all. Babies who don't get the right nutrition early in life may never reach their full potential as adults. Not only are these numbers unacceptable - in Africa, they're getting worse. Over the last three years, disasters and climate change have caused hunger to go up every year. Farmers struggle to grow the food they need to grow food for themselves, and to sell into markets for others to eat. If we don't do something, 40 million people could be hungry by 2050.

Ring Road Project

The poor condition of community roads has greatly affected farmers and the overall economic growth of Africa countries as it has become increasing difficult for easy movement of goods and people.

The construction of numerous Ring Roads will improve quality of life in Africa by helping to decongest the cities and promoting the use of e-vehicles. Access to markets, economic opportunities, as well as administrative, health and educational services will be enhanced. It will stimulate economic activities and directly create jobs. By improving road infrastructure and transport services focusing on safety elements and universal features for pedestrians and vulnerable users, the project benefits will be inclusive.

Provision will be made for use of e-vehicles as last mile connectivity to support implementation of low carbon-emission pathways and the projects will align with the Paris Agreement requirements.

Services and Livelihood for Displaced People

The project will continue with the support of the UKAPRD to the affected countries in managing the influx of millions of displaced people. Now a protracted situation, the crisis is putting significant pressure on infrastructure and causing substantial challenges in terms of food, shelter, health, security, water, sanitation, and other services in the Displaced persons camps and host communities. The project will work with the government, humanitarian agencies, and other development partners to address critical and complex infrastructure needs and basic services with a focus on cost-effective and sustainable solutions while providing opportunities for skills development and livelihood enhancement. Support will encompass interventions in (i) water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); (ii) roads and bridges; (iii) security and safety; (iv) drainage; (v) food security; and (vi) disaster resilience, applying a differentiated approach in the Displaced persons camps and host communities.

The future belongs to Africa, we are building it.
